Anthony McCall: Elements for a Retrospective
Anthony McCall (born 1946) works in the intersection between film, sculpture, installation, drawing and performances.
He was a pioneering figure amongst the Avant Garde arts scene in London in the 1970’s, with his films and performances.
After moving to New York in 1973, he created his now legendary work Line Describing a Cone, which led to a period of “Light films”, where by means of a beam of light in a room filled with fog or cloud of fine dust created an illusion of three dimensional forms, ellipses, waves and flat planes, that expand, contract and move through space. We are showing three works that are a result of a further development of this method, notably the light installations Doubling Back, 2003, Turning Under, 2003 and You and I, Horizontal 2005.
The public are involved actively in the installations, most particularly the light sculptures as one moves through the space, though they remain sharply defined as precise sculptural forms. When one breaks through the seemingly solid light forms and become a part of them, one experiences a mystical and sublime sense of staring into the infinity of the cosmos.
In addition to the light installations, is presented a retrospective showing of three films from the 1970’s including Landscape for Fire, 1972, Landscape for White Squares, 1972 and Earthwork 1972, as well as the slide show Miniature in Black and White, 1972, together with an exhibition of a selection of the artist’s working sketches and drawings.
Anthony McCall’s work is displayed in some of the world’s most prestigious collections, including Tate Gallery, London, England; Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA; Musée National d'Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, USA; Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, Spain and Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt, Germany.
Currently Anthony McCall has exhibitions in Paris, Berlin, Shanghai, Sao Paolo and now Aalborg.
The Anthony McCall exhibition is made in collaboration with the Serpentine Gallery, London, Nordjyllands Kunstmuseum, Aalborg, Sean Kelly Gallery, New York and Galerie Thomas Zander, Cologne.
